In support of National Transportation Week, we’d like to take a look back at Service King’s most recent Recycled Rides event, The Great American Giveaway.

In remembrance of the largest single giveaway in collision repair history, we asked Mark Housley, Great American Giveaway recipient, to share his thoughts on just how much reliable transportation can truly mean to those in need. Take a look at his Q&A below.

What did life look like for you before you had a vehicle?

“It was difficult to get around for doctor's appointments, food, entertainment, etc. Life did not seem as easy as it should be.”

What were some of the difficulties you experienced in your life due to not having access to a vehicle?

“I had to rely on others and their schedules in order to make doctor's appointments, go to the store or just get out of the house.”

Do you think people take having a vehicle for granted? If so, how?

“Yes, I believe they do. Having a vehicle is a privilege and most people feel like it's a right. Once you do not have a vehicle and have to rely on others, you learn what a blessing it is to have your own.”

What was your reaction when you learned you were selected for Service King’s Great American Giveaway?

“At first we thought it was a joke and once we learned that it was truly happening, it was a gift from God. And all those that made it happen and all those that worked so hard to make the vehicle run well and look so beautiful were also a blessing.”

It’s been eight months since receiving the vehicle. How has your life changed?

Life has changed tremendously. Scheduling doctor's appointments, just running to the store and just being able to get out and move around away from the house has been something that we will never take for granted again.”

How has receiving a vehicle made a difference in your overall quality of life?

Quality of life has improved greatly. We have been able to go to Texas to visit my mother-in-law. We've been able to bring our grandson to our home to spend the night when his mom was in Neosho, Missouri. So for us, it has allowed us to spend time with friends and family that we normally would have never been able to.”

What have you enjoyed most about having the vehicle?

“Freedom. Not having to rely on others and their time schedules. Not strapped for cash knowing we'd have a car payment that we could not afford. We were absolutely stunned with the beautiful and well-fitted vehicle for our family.”

If you had to sum it up into a single sentence, what would you say your car means to you?

“It's hard to say in a single sentence what having this vehicle means to us. But if we have to sum it up in a single sentence, we would say this vehicle means the world to us and has opened up so many opportunities for us to visit friends, family and just have the freedom that we would have never had before.”

Sincerely yours and God bless all that had a hand in making this dream come true,

 Mark & Shireen Housley
