At Service King, we understand the challenges our nation's veterans can face as they transition back into civilian life. That's why the Service King team is dedicated to hiring 500 military veterans and spouses in five years. In honor of those who have joined the Service King family through our Mission 2 Hire initiative, the Service Sunday series highlights the stories of our teammates who have truly given so much.

This Sunday, we are proud to feature, Joseph McGullam, a painter's helper at Service King's Georgetown location. Take a deeper look at Joey's Mission 2 Hire journey below.

How long did you serve?
3 years, 16 weeks, U.S. Army

How long have you been a Service King teammate?
Approximately 8 months

How did you begin a career in the military?
I joined when I was 18 years old. I signed up to be an infantryman and had the hopes of deploying overseas.

Tell us a little bit about your experience transitioning back into civilian life. What were some of the difficulties you experienced?
I thought the transition was rather difficult. Veterans with combat jobs are not relatable to jobs in the civilian sector. Not everyone is looking to hire someone who is trained for combat. Veterans who have had a career as a military police officer, medic or even cook, have a higher chance of getting a job quicker and easier.

What does the Mission 2 Hire initiative mean to you?
I believe it is a fantastic program. Any company that wants to hire veterans is very uplifting. Veterans struggle every day to find a job, so to hear that hundreds of veterans are hired, is just remarkable.

Why do you think it is important that organizations develop programs to help veterans transition back into civilian life?
Like I stated in an earlier question, veterans with combat roles have a harder struggle finding jobs when they get out, especially if they do not have college degrees. To offer them a job, even just as a stepping-stone to survive, can mean the world to them.

How has this made an impact on your life?
From the professional aspect, I know I can trust the company I work for when it comes to healthcare and my personal issues. Personally, I know Service King will take care of anything I need with no hassle at all.

What is your favorite aspect of your job?
I love the fact that I work with so many other veterans and can relate to them. We share stories and experiences. It's very comforting to know your brothers and sisters are working right with you.

What is your favorite part about being in the Service King family?
Service King knows how to take care of their employees. Issues, promotions, and everything else, gets handled accordingly and promptly.

What would you say you are most passionate about?
I'm passionate about being a painter. I will learn as much as I can about prepping, masking and painting.

What are some of your hobbies?
I enjoy firearms. I also enjoy Jeeps. I own a Jeep Wrangler that is for off road performance.

What is most important to you and why?
Family is the most important thing to me; it should be for everyone. Family is irreplaceable and will always be there for you regardless of the circumstance.

If there is one thing you would like more people to understand about veterans, what would that be?
I think people should be more accepting of veterans. People are so quick to judge and jump to conclusions, but if people would listen to them and try to place themselves in their shoes, then maybe they would understand.
